Healthy living in Nigeria doesn't have to break the bank - DIET AND WELLNESS

Eating healthy in Nigeria doesn't have to be expensive.

Sometimes, social media makes healthy living look like a lifestyle reserved for people who shop at fancy supermarkets.

Avocado toast. Greek yoghurt. Almond milk. Chia seeds. Protein bars. Nice? Sure.

Necessary? Not always.

Here in Nigeria, we already have plenty of affordable foods that can form part of a balanced diet. The trick isn't necessarily buying the most expensive food. It's learning how to combine what is available wisely.

🫘 1. Beans are your friend

Beans are affordable, filling and a useful source of plant protein.

You can have beans with boiled plantain, pap, rice or yam. You don't need to turn every meal into a complicated recipe.

And if cooking beans from scratch feels like a full-time job, cook a large quantity and portion it for several meals.

Budget-friendly doesn't have to mean boring.

🥚 2. Don't underestimate eggs

Eggs are an easy way to add protein to a meal.

Boiled, scrambled or made into an omelette with tomatoes, onions and peppers, they can turn a simple meal into something more satisfying.

And you don't have to eat a mountain of eggs because you're trying to “eat healthy.” Balance is the goal.

🍠 3. Our everyday staples can still fit

Rice. Yam. Garri. Potatoes. Plantain. Oats. Pap.

You don't automatically have to remove them because someone online called them “bad foods.” What matters is how much you eat, what you eat with them, and how your overall diet looks.

A plate of rice with vegetables and a protein source can be very different from a plate dominated by rice with little else.

🥬 4. Buy vegetables that are actually available

You don't need to hunt for exotic vegetables. Ugu, spinach, waterleaf, okra, cabbage, carrots, tomatoes and other locally available produce can help you add variety to your meals.

And here's a simple money-saving trick: Buy what's in season and reasonably priced.

Healthy eating shouldn't require you to go broke trying to find one particular “superfood.”

🐟 5. Make local protein choices

Fish, eggs, beans, lentils, groundnuts and other affordable protein sources can be incorporated depending on your preferences and budget.

The goal isn't to create the perfect Instagram meal. It's to create meals that are nutritious, filling, affordable and realistic enough for you to keep eating them.

💡 The real secret: build better plates

Instead of asking:

“What's the cheapest healthy food?”

Try asking:

“How can I make this meal more balanced?”

For example:

Rice + beans + vegetables

Yam + egg + vegetable sauce

Boiled plantain + beans

Pap + egg

Potatoes + fish + vegetables

Simple meals.

Nothing fancy.

Just smarter combinations.

🛒 A simple Nigerian healthy-shopping mindset

Before you go to the market, make a small plan. Buy a few staples, a few protein sources, and whatever vegetables/fruits are affordable and available.

You don't need to completely change your diet overnight.

Start with one meal.

Then another.

Small changes that you can actually maintain are often more useful than an expensive “perfect” diet you abandon after two weeks.

And remember:

Healthy eating isn't about eating expensive food. It's about making better choices with what you have.

So the next time someone tells you that healthy living is only for people with a big food budget, tell them:

“Come, let's go to the Nigerian market.” 😂
