Belgian cyclist, Bjorg Lambrecht, 22, dies after crash during Tour of Poland cycling race

Belgian professional cyclist, Bjorg Lambrecht has died after crashing during the third stage of the Tour of Poland.


The young cyclist died on Monday, August 5, 2019, at the age of 22.

Lambrecht went down in a crash near the town of Zory during heavy rainfall and struck a culvert. He was immediately treated by the race’s medical staff, and required emergency resuscitation.

The Belgian rider crashed into a concrete culvert around 60 miles from the finish line of the third stage from Chorzow to Zabrze during heavy rainfall.

According to The Sun, he was immediately treated on the scene then taken to a nearby hospital in Rybnik by ambulance, but died during surgery.

“We tried to give a heart massage just afterwards, then we called for a helicopter but his condition was so serious it wasn’t able to transport him,” race doctor Ryszard Wisniewski said. Lambrecht was taken to a hospital in an ambulance, where he did not survive emergency surgery.

Lambrecht was regarded as one of Belgium's most promising riders and in 2017, won the Under-23 version of the prestigious Liege-Bastogne-Liege race.

He also won the Best Young Rider competition at the Criterium de Dauphine in June.
