‪#‎IS_SEXUAL_VIOLENCE_HAPPENING_IN_AFRICA‬?
Sometimes it can be
difficult to imagine the
scale of violence
incidents that happen
each and every day
across Africa, and the
world. One way to
measure how often
violence happens, is
with statistics and
estimations.

- In Africa alone, it is
estimated that every 2
in 3 women have been a
victim of gender based
violence.
- In South Africa, it is
estimated that over
80% of women living in
rural areas have been
victims of domestic
violence.
- In South Africa over
65 000 rapes are
reported a year, but the
real number is likely to
be almost 10 times
more.
- In Ghana, a 2005 study
estimates that 8% of
all women have been
raped or sexually
assaulted.
- In Nigeria, a poll of 585
adults this year
revealed that 34%
believed that the cause
of rape is indecent
dressing and 29% knew
a victim of rape.
- In Tanzania, a survey
of 1004 women over
the age of 12 showed
that 20% had been
raped but only half
reported it to the police
as the perpetrator was
a friend, family member
or colleague.
- In Zimbabwe, 2 195
cases of rape were
reported in the first half
of 2012.
- In Kenya, it is
estimated that 8 of
every 10 women have
experienced abuse or
assault and that a
woman is raped every
30 minutes.
